Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellate) and Russian Olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia) are two species of invasive plants. They are similar in appearance but can be distinguished by the fruit. The autumn olive has red juicy fruit when ripe and the Russian olive has yellow, dry and mealy fruit.
Identifying and removing Elaeagnus species at Elms has been and will continue to be a project for some visiting students.
